FTSE 100 movers: Homebuilders build on previous session's gains
Homebuilders' shares including those of Persimmon, Barratt Developments, Taylor Wimpey and Berkeley Group were all near the top of the leaderboard, helped by the recent rebound in sentiment towards the sector.
Part of that was the result of the recent improvement in the much better than expected results of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors' house price index published the day before.
Nevertheless, while conceding that the survey "suggests" that the wider housing market was showing signs of stabilisation, analysts at Canaccord Genuity were of the view that: "the general picture remains one of subdued activity and house price inflation on average".
"We would also caution against extrapolating these trends into the second half as there are likely to be some big political events over the coming weeks and months that will dominate the direction and trends in the wider market," they added in a research note sent to clients.
US-focused CRH was also higher, on the back of the recent record highs on Wall Street.
So too were shares of BAE Systems, after Jeremy Hunt announced that the Royal Navy had been "run down too much" and pledged more spending on the service in the wake of recent frictions with Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.
