Barton, who became a member of the board in 2002, was appointed deputy chairman in 2004 and chairman in 2006.
The company said he has made “an outstanding contribution” over the last 15 years and “his leadership, experience and wise counsel have been tremendously valuable over that time”.
Roney has been appointed as an independent non-executive director, deputy chairman and chairman designate with immediate effect. He will succeed Barton as chairman when he retires in August.
He was CEO of FTSE 100 outsourcing and distribution group Bunzl from 2005 until his retirement in April 2016. He is currently chairman of Grafton Group and a non-executive director of Brown-Forman Corporation.
He was also formerly a non-executive director of Johnson Matthey.
