Norman Murray, the chairman of three years at oilfield services group Petrofac, announced his resignation from the board on Friday.
The company said that he will step down with immediate effect for "compassionate reasons".
"It is with tremendous sadness that I step down from the board," Murray said in a statement, as he passed on his duties to current senior independent director Rijnhard van Tets.
"I would like to thank my board colleagues for their support during my tenure and their understanding of my current situation. I leave Petrofac in good shape and the board in Rijnhard's experienced and capable hands."
While Petrofac did not give any further details for the reason of his departure, chief executive Ayman Asfari said boardmembers "understand his reasons and our thoughts and best wishes remain with him and his family".
