The project is the company's fourth from the government's Innovate UK agency and will start in the second quarter of the year with the £300,000 being paid out over 18 months.
Proxama will develop location-based marketing services for travellers, provide wi-fi services and expand its network of bluetooth low energy beacons into Manchester to gather data to better match transport services to demand.
As part of the project AIM-listed Proxama will collaborate with US technology giant Cisco, internet access company Purple, data firm Movement Strategies, Transport for Greater Manchester and transport company Sustainable Environment.
Chief executive John Kennedy said: "This project demonstrates the value of our technology and our ability to support smarter, targeted marketing services. This contract will also allow us to significantly increase the number of beacons that we have outside of London. Having more beacons means we are able to help brands to reach more consumers in a targeted way, and gather more data."
Shares in Proxama were up 3.57% to 0.388p at 1355 GMT.
