As part of its efforts, it placed an initial order to receive 100,000 Teslas by the end of 2022, alongside new EV charging infrastructure across its operations worldwide.
"Electric vehicles are now mainstream, and we've only just begun to see rising global demand and interest," said Hertz interim CEO Mark Fields.
"The new Hertz is going to lead the way as a mobility company, starting with the largest EV rental fleet in North America and a commitment to grow our EV fleet and provide the best rental and recharging experience for leisure and business customers around the world."
EV sales tripled in 2020 and according to Pew Research, 40% of US consumers said they would likely consider an electric vehicle the next time that they were in the market for a new vehicle.
In August alone, three US carmakers committed themselves to boosting the share of EVs in their total sales to between 40-50% by 2030.
Roll out of the Tesla Model 3's at Hertz airport and neighbourhood locations in major US markets and select cities in Europe was foreseen in early November and expanding through year-end.
The car rental giant also said that it would install thousands of chargers across its location network, with customers to be given access to 3,000 such stations.
Although semiconductor or chip shortages might affect its plans, the current order was expected to take the share of EVs in Hertz's fleet to more than 20%.
