Dyson to cut 900 jobs as consumer habits move online
Dyson announced it was cutting 900 jobs globally on Thursday, with 600 of those in the UK, citing the Covid-19 crisis as hastening its ongoing restructure.
The privately-held peddler of vacuum cleaners and hair dryers said the number of people now shopping online meant jobs needed to go in its customer service and retail operations.
“The Covid-19 crisis has accelerated changes in consumer behaviour and therefore requires changes in how we engage with our customers and how we sell our products,” a spokesman for the company told the BBC.
Dyson’s workforce totald 14,000 globally, with 4,000 employed in the UK.
The company came under fire in recent years, after announcing plans to move its headquarters to Singapore, which was seen as a “vote of no confidence” by some MPs after its founder James Dyson was a vocal proponent of Brexit.
