Train derails in Scotland's Stonehaven; Several passengers 'gravely injured'
A train derailed on Wednesday near Stonehaven in Scotland seriously injuring some passengers and reportedly killing the driver.
Emergency services were called to the site of the crash where smoke could be seen billowing from the track as there was a suspected fire in the engine.
British Transport Police confirmed they were responding to the incident, stating: “Officers were called to the scene at 9.43am and remain there alongside paramedics and the fire brigade.”
The Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) union said four carriages of the 6:38am Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street service had derailed.
Some witness reports on social media suggested the train had fallen down an embankment after running into a landslip.
Scottish first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, described the incident as “extremely serious” and confirmed the report of several serious injuries.
Sources told The Scotsman newspaper that the driver had perished in the crash and there are fears of a second fatality.
