Special cabinet called to decide on action in Syria
Theresa May will convene a 'war cabinet' on Thursday in order to seek pre-approval for the UK to join a tripartite attack on the Syrian regime in response to its alleged use of chemical weapons.
The military action, which might start within hours of Cabinet approval, would be led by France and the US and be aimed at Syrian president Bashar al Assad's chemical weapons infrastructure, Sky reported.
According to the broadcaster, indications were that Parliament would not be consulted before the attack, despite calls from the main opposition parties for Westminster to consult MPs before British participation in any punitive action was decided.
Pointing to a lack of strategic objectives, according to Sky a number of Conservative lawmakers had also urged caution.
