Santander to extend claim deadline after IT problems
Santander has extended the deadline to allow people to file PPI complaints after the lender's website suffered some IT issues.
Officially, all PPI complaints had to be registered by 23.59BST on Thursday night, but Santander said it was still accepting claims until 2000 BST on Friday.
"Due to the high volume of customers contacting us about PPI, you can continue to make a PPI complaint or to submit PPI inquiries using the details below," Santander said.
Some users complained that they had been unable to insert their date of birth, meaning that they could not complete their claims process, while others said the “submit” button was not working.
The complaints were in relation to the UK’s biggest mis-selling scandal ever when customers were wrongly sold PPI or “payment protection insurance” dating from as far back as the 1970s all the way to the late 2000s.
It was meant to pay out in the event someone lost their job or fell ill, but lenders often failed to check whether the customer was covered by other policies or needed to be covered at all which was unfair to customers. Some also charged hefty commissions - often of as much as 80% of the value of the policy.
But until Friday, the users who were wrongly sold the insurance could now file claims to ask for compensation.
In total, around £36.0bn has been paid out in relation to PPI mis-selling, although in the run-up to the deadline, as much as £14.0bn remained unclaimed.
