The Australian airline was set to buy eight of the double-decker planes which cost $455m each. It assured however that it would be upgrading its existing fleet of 12 A380s this year.
“These aircraft have not been part of the airline’s fleet and network plans for some time,” Qantas said in its statement, referring to the 2006 order of the superjumbo planes.
The aircraft’s future is on the line as Emirates, the largest operator of the range, may convert some or all of its most recent 20 orders for the jet into smaller A350s.
Last week IAG boss Willie Walsh said Airbus should lower the price of the A380 if it wanted to sell more of them.
Airbus stock was down 0.39% on Thursday morning.
