In the six months to November 2014, speeds rose 21% in urban areas across the UK but rural areas saw no significant increase.
The growth of BT’s Openreach and Virgin Media’s cable network has given speeds a significant boost, new data revealed on Thursday.
Compared to Virgin Media’s entry level service, which promises customers speeds of up to 50mbps, BT’s FTTC-based services now boast top speeds of 38mbps and 76mbps.
Despite the increase in top speeds though, average download speeds came in around 22.8mbps, according to Ofcom’s latest report, which fell below the EU’s definition of superfast (30mbps).
