Bunzl tapped Ventress to succeed current chair Philip Rogerson, who's headed up the company since January 2010, after a thorough search led by senior independent director Vanda Murray.
Ventress will join the group on 1 June and will assume the role of chairman of its board after Rogerson's retirement following the FTSE 100 resident's annual general meeting in April 2020.
In order to rebalance his portfolio of directorships, Ventress, currently Chairman of Galliford Try and a non-executive director of BBA Aviation, will retire from the board of Softcat on 31 December 2019.
Discussing the appointment, Rogerson said: "I am very pleased to welcome Peter as my successor and future Chairman of Bunzl.
"With many years of relevant commercial and Board experience, I am confident that he will successfully lead Bunzl through the next phase of its long history and create further sustainable value for the benefit of stakeholders as we continue to grow and develop the business."
As of 0815 BST, Bunzl shares had ticked up 1.20% to 2,115p.
