Airtel Uganda unit wins 20-year operator licence

Telecoms and mobile money services company Airtel Africa said Uganda unit had granted a 20-year national telecom operator licence for $74.6m.

Under the new licence, which went into effect from July 1, 2020, Airtel Uganda would retain all current spectrum subject to the law and terms of assignment,” the company said on Friday.
“The scope of services will be the provision of basic telecommunication services, infrastructure services, and value-added telecommunication services. In addition, Airtel Uganda commits to achieving coverage of 90% of the geographical boundary of Uganda within five years of the effective date of the licence - with a minimum obligation of providing voice and data services,” it added.
