US open: Stocks lower following NFP reading
Major indices were in the red early on Friday as investors digested last month's non-farm jobs report.
As of 1515 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.23% at 44,645.97, while the S&P 500 lost 0.33% to 6,063.62 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.78% weaker at 19,638.47.
The Dow opened 101.66 points lower on Friday, extending losses recorded in the previous session following a barrage of blue-chip corporate earnings that received a mixed reaction from investors.
Friday's primary focus was news that US hiring slowed by more than anticipated at the start of 2025, albeit after a sharp rise at the end of the previous year. According to the Department of Labor, in seasonally adjusted terms, non-farm payrolls grew by 143,000 during the month of January. That followed an upwardly revised gain of 307,000 for December – up from 257,000. The rate of unemployment, meanwhile, which is derived from a different survey than the payroll figures, ticked lower by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.0%.
Elsewhere on the macro front, US wholesale inventories decreased 0.50% month-on-month in December, according to the Census Bureau.
Still to come, November consumer credit change data was slated for release at 2000 GMT.
In the corporate space, shares in online retail behemoth Amazon were in the red as disappointing guidance overshadowed both top and bottom-line beats, while travel technology group Expedia said Q4 profits and revenues had grown thanks to increased bookings across segments.
