The order was for the bigger A330-900 models said, the company announced, with Virgin Atlantic set to replace its Airbus A330-300s and -200s with the -900 version of the re-engined aircraft.
Speaking during a Paris air show briefing on Monday, Virgin Atlantic chief executive Shai Weiss said: "Return to growth is crucial and critical for us."
Weiss said that the order was a part of the airline's "biggest fleet transformation" ever, which included the expected delivery shortly of the carrier's first A350-1000 – the first of 12 such aircraft.
Deliveries would take place over the course of 2021-24.
