Tuesday preview: Brexit, MPC and Fedspeak in focus
The flow of economic data is scheduled to be very light on Tuesday, with investors instead expected to focus on the ongoing Brexit talks and a flurry of speeches from top officials at the Bank of England and US Federal Reserve.
Regarding Brexit, the Democratic Unionist Party's, Arlene Foster, was set to meet the European Union's chief trade negotiator, Michel Barnier, to discuss her concerns over the Irish border issue.
Back in the UK meanwhile, the Monetary Policy Committee's Ben Broadbent was scheduled to speak before the Lords Economic Affairs Committee at 1535 BST.
He would be followed by the Governor himself, at the annual CISI dinner at Mansion House, at 2000 BST.
Stateside, the President of the Federal Reserve bank of New York, John Williams, was due to speak at 1535 BST, followed by his opposite number at the Philly Fed, Patrick Harker, at 1800 BST.
Among the companies set to update their shareholders are specialist recruiter Robert Walters and Premier Asset Management.
For the former, analysts at Numis were expecting "another strong" performance for its third quarter, on the back of growth in Japan and France, in particular.
Nevertheless, analyst Steve Woolf told clients to mind company management's cautious nature which, faced with Brexit, trade tariffs and upcoming political elections, meant they were likely to wait unil later in the year before showing greater confidence in the outlook for earnings.
"Despite this, we note that following a series of earnings upgrades over the past 12-months, our FY18E pre-tax profit forecast of £47.2m is c.22% higher than it was a year ago, and we have conviction in further positive earnings momentum over the next six months," Woolf said.
For Premier meanwhile, Numis's David McCann forecast fourth quarter assets under management of £6,847m, highlighting the scope for roughly 23% annual growth in the company's profits before tax between fiscal years 2017 to 2020.
