Marble Point Loan Financing Limited
Unaudited Net Asset Value and Publication of Monthly Report
As at the close of business on 29 March 2019, the estimated unaudited net asset value ("NAV") per Ordinary Share of Marble Point Loan Financing Limited ("MPLF") is as follows:
Share class | March 2019 Month End NAV (1) | February 2019 Month End NAV(1) | Monthly Change in NAV (1) | Total Return since Admission (1) |
Ordinary Shares | USD 0.8585 | USD 0.8697 | USD (0.0112) | (6.35%) |
MPLF's NAV total return was -1.26% in March. During this same period, the CSLLI, the ICE BAML HYI and the S&P 500 Index registered monthly total returns of -0.12%, 0.98% and 1.94%, respectively.(2)
Leveraged loans generated a negative return in March as the market contended with recalibrated rate expectations. Indications by the Federal Reserve that interest rate hikes were unlikely for the balance of 2019 became clearer during the month. These dovish comments, together with a continuation of net outflows from retail loan funds, helped push the CSLLI to 96.30% at month end, down from 96.89% at 28 February 2019. Net retail fund outflows of $3.2 billion brought the quarter total to more than $11 billion, according to JP Morgan. The effect of these outflows on the loan market has recently been muted by purchasing power from consistent new issue CLO creation and quarter-end loan repayments, coupled with a significant decline in new loan issuance. This limited primary loan supply reflects reduced LBO activity stemming from the uncertainty caused by the December sell off in loans, the US Government shutdown and unsettled trade disputes. As a result, the CSLLI increased 0.99 points from 29 March to 18 April to 97.29%, a level not seen since November 2018.
The decline in MPLF's NAV partially reflects the company's valuation process which includes utilising dealer quotes as an input to estimate the fair value of its equity positions. In March, indicative dealer quotes for CLO equity attributable to MPLF generally fell, commensurate with the month's broader loan market movements, and following a rapid increase in loan prices seen during the first two months of 2019. While CLOs are non-mark-to-market vehicles, CLO equity NAVs calculated on the underlying assets remain one factor in MPLF's valuation process, and MPLF's CLO equity NAVs decreased in March.
MPLF's total investment in a loan accumulation facility ("LAF") was unchanged at $28.5 million as at 29 March 2019 and it remains the intention to convert the LAF into a new CLO investment later this year. The amount of ramped assets in the LAF increased slightly to $194.2 million as at 29 March 2019 from $188.5 million at 28 February 2019.
As reported by S&P/LCD, there were 23 new U.S. CLOs issued in March, representing approximately $11.0 billion of volume, bringing the YTD total to $29.3 billion as compared to $32.1 billion for the YTD 2018 period. March also saw $3.5 billion of CLO reset issuance and $1.2 billion of CLO refinancing activity, bringing the full year totals to $6.3 billion and $3.1 billion, respectively.
As reported by S&P/LCD, while one constituent of the S&P/LSTA Leveraged Loan Index (CTI Foods) defaulted in March, the lagging 12-month default rate decreased to 0.93%, its lowest level in almost seven years as the $6.3 billion iHeart debt facility rolled off the calculation. MPLF had no exposure to CTI Foods.
