A dominating final-day singles performance on Sunday saw the United States win the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2008, outgunning Europe 17-11 at Hazeltine.

It was a different story earlier in the day, as Europe led in seven of the 12 singles matches, despite trailing 9½-6½ heading into the final day.

The Americans did a stellar job of turning things around, however, as Patrick Reed knocked off Rory McIlroy for the first of seven wins for the Americans.

The decisive point was won by Ryan Moore, who beat Lee Westwood on the 18th to seal the deal for the hosts.

Americans are known for loving their sweets, and the victory was especially saccharine for Davis Love III.

Love was also at the helm four years ago at Medinah, when Europe took home the silverware despite finishing the second afternoon 10-4 down.

The Europeans had of course arrived in Minnesota prepared to lift the Ryder Cup for a fourth successive time, which no team has done since the inclusion of players from continental Europe in 1979.

Darren Clarke will be taking the team home with some serious contemplating to do.
