Sweetener maker Tate & Lyle led the downside after issuing a profit warning. It blamed severe US weather and the temporary shutdown of a plant in Singapore for higher costs, but did also say that sales of its flagship Splenda sucralose sweetener were ahead of last year. It admitted that the first half of the year had been very challenging as it faced significant disruption to its supply chain and an increasingly competitive market for Splenda.

Credit Suisse helped push Ferrexpo into the red after reiterating its 'neutral' rating and cutting its target price by 20p to 140p.

PZ Cussons also fell despite publishing a generally upbeat trading update. However, the personal care products maker did highlight a few issues in Nigeria, where its performance has been affected by unrest.

Go-Ahead Group rose after Deutsche Bank upped its rating on the stock to 'buy' from 'hold' and raised its target price from 2,720p to 2,790p.

AG Barr inched higher after effervescent interim results. It revealed that its total turnover grew by 5.4% to £135.7m in the six months ending on 27 July to reach £135.7m, resulting in a 14.6% increase in profit before tax (PBT) to £19m.
