London's FTSE 250 was down 0.4% to 20,140.65 in afternoon trade on Tuesday.

Virgin Money was the standout gainer as it said third-quarter profitability, earnings and underlying return on tangible equity were all in line with expectations.

The bank said it made further improvement in its overall net promoter score to +40, up from +29 at the end of 2016, which it said made Virgin Money “one of the best-rated” retail banks for customer satisfaction.

Workspace was on the front foot as JPMorgan Cazenove lifted its price target on the stock to 1,080p from 1040p and retained its 'overweight' rating. The bank said H1-18 capital growth looks set to be robust, while future earnings growth of 15% per annum adds a new dynamic.

Speciality chemicals group Elementis was boosted by an upgrade to 'outperform' at Evercore.
