FTSE 250 movers: TUI surges; Marston's gives back some gains

London’s FTSE 250 was up 3% at 16,894.29 in afternoon trade on Tuesday.

Travel company Tui was the standout gainer after news agency DPA suggested the German government plans to end a travel warning for tourist trips to 31 European countries from 15 June. It was also boosted by news that Spain will lift its 14-day quarantine for overseas arrivals from 1 July.

London Capital Group analyst Jasper Lawler said: “The timing couldn’t be better for travel firms hoping to grab the end of the Summer bookings season."

Luxury car maker Aston Martin rallied as it confirmed the departure of chief executive Andy Palmer to be replaced by AMG chief Tobias Moers in August.

On the downside, Marston's was the worst performer, having surged at the end of last week after it announced a new joint venture partnership with Carlsberg UK to create a "best-in-class, brand-led UK brewer of scale" worth around £780m.

Softcat was in the red even as it said revenue and profit rose in the third quarter and that its business was proving resilient during the Covid-19 crisis.

In a brief trading statement for the three months to the end of April, the company said: "The company has traded satisfactorily during the period and delivered growth in revenue, gross profit and operating profit. Cash receipts from customers have remained broadly in line with normal trends."
