London's FTSE 250 was flat at 20,015.41 in afternoon trade on Thursday.

Rotork was on the front foot after it said growth in customer orders sped up in the third quarter, as the industrial valves specialist benefited from continued improvement in upstream and downstream oil and gas markets.

Pub group Mitchells & Butlers was under the cosh after it reported a drop in full-year profit as it highlighted inflationary cost headwinds and said it will not pay an interim dividend in the current financial year, although revenue rose.

In the 53 weeks to the end of September, pre-tax profit fell to £77m from £94m amid cost headwinds across the industry, which the company said have hit its margins. Peer Greene King was also in the red.

Cineworld was on the back foot despite saying box office and retail takings were up this year as it opened and refurbished more cinemas. Total revenue in the year to 19 November rose 10.6%, or 6.5% excluding currency changes, driven by growth outside the UK and Ireland.

Vedanta Resources, TalkTalk and 3i Infrastructure all retreated as their stock went ex-dividend.
