London’s FTSE 250 was up 1.9% at 17,106.24 in afternoon trade on Friday.

Synthomer was the top performer on the index, having tanked on Thursday after it warned on profits.

The company, which supplies aqueous polymers, said it now expects full-year earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation to be 10% to 15% below its previous guidance. It said macroeconomic conditions had deteriorated further since August, and that post-Covid customer de-stocking was set to last until at least the end of next year.

Housebuilders Bellway and Vistry were on the rise, recovering from recent heavy losses.

On the downside, Carnival tanked after the cruise operator said it was expecting to report a loss for the fourth quarter. Travel company Tui also fell sharply.
