London’s FTSE 100 was up 3.4% at 5,997.44 in afternoon trade on Monday.

Airlines easyJet and IAG flew higher amid optimism over easing travel restrictions, while cruise operator Carnival also rallied.

Precious metals miner Fresnillo shone as gold prices hit a near eight-year high.

Neil Wilson, chief market analyst at Markets.com, said: "Gold has emerged as a clear winner from the economic turmoil created by the pandemic. Prices were slotted into a consolidation pattern since mid-April and a tentative upside breach was attempted on Friday, but the daily close was below the $1,747 level that marked the multi-year high struck last month.

"There has been more energy about gold bulls today and prices have driven up to above $1,760, the highest since Oct 2012. The peak in that month of $1795 is the next target for bulls."

Miners were also in the black, with Anglo American, BHP, Rio Tinto and Glencore all sharply higher.

On the downside, Ocado was weaker on news that German discounter Aldi will trial grocery home delivery with Deliveroo. Morrisons and Sainsburys were also a little lower.
