FTSE 100 movers: Standard Chartered soars on new CEO, RBS dips after missing forecasts

Standard Chartered surged after appointing former JPMorgan boss Bill Winters as its new chief executive, as it confirmed current head Peter Sands will step down in June. The bank also announced that chairman John Peace will step down in 2016.

Mining stocks were on the rise as metal prices improved, with Antofagasta and Randgold both making decent gains.

RBS dropped after missing forecasts with its 2014 results, reporting a loss of £3.5bn for the year, though this was still better than the £9bn loss recorded in 2013. The bank also confirmed the appointment of Sir Howard Davies as its new chairman.

Anglo-Dutch information group Reed Elsevier was in the red as investors were unimpressed by plans to combine its two parent companies and rename itself RELX Group. “We are now extending our efforts to modernise and simplify the company to our corporate structure, our share listings, and our corporate entity names,” said chief executive Erik Engstrom.

Capita was weaker as the outsourcing and business services giant underwhelmed with a 13% rise in underling pre-tax profit to £535.7m last year.

RSA Insurance was trading lower, despite returning to an annual profit and recommenced its dividend. The group revealed its CFO Richard Houghton would leave his role on 7 May.

Easyjet was trading lower after going ex-dividend.
