London’s FTSE 100 was up 1.3% at 6,418.31 in afternoon trade on Tuesday.

Engine maker Rolls-Royce, Premier Inn owner Whitbread and British Airways owner IAG were all up, boosted by recent vaccine updates and news that from next month, travellers who arrive in England will be able to cut their quarantine to five days from 14 if they test negative for coronavirus on the fifth day. Passengers will have to pay for the tests privately.

Oil giants BP and Shell gushed higher as oil prices rallied.

Miners Antofagasta and Glencore both gained after an upgrade to ‘buy’ from ‘hold’ at Jefferies, which lifted its copper price forecasts.

"In our base and bull case scenarios, copper demand will significantly exceed supply starting in 2021," Jefferies said.

On the downside, precious metals miner Fresnillo lost its shine as gold prices fell to a four-month low.

JD Sports lost ground following reports it is in exclusive talks to take over Debenhams, while inspection, product testing and certification company Intertek fell after a disappointing trading statement.

Pennon was in the red after its half-year results.
