FTSE 100 movers: Fresnillo shines; JD Sports retreats

London’s FTSE 100 was up 0.9% at 6,152.41 in afternoon trade on Monday.

Shares of precious metals miner Fresnillo shone as gold prices advanced. Oanda said: "Gold prices are rising but the gains are being kept in check as global equities rise ahead of the start to earnings season.

"Gold should continue to rise higher as the record increases in Covid-19 cases worldwide will likely force US and European leaders into strongly signalling more fiscal stimulus is coming."

Travel-related stocks advanced, with Premier Inn owner Whitbread and InterContinental Hotels both higher.

Elsewhere, miner Rio Tinto was trading up as copper prices rallied on possible supply issues, after workers at a Chilean mine owned by Antofagasta voted in favour of strike action.

On the downside, sportswear retailer JD Sports Fashion was under the cosh. The latest survey released by Springboard showed that visits to shops in the UK more than halved in June despite the reopening of many non-essential shops from the Covid-19 lockdown.

Footfall fell 56.3% in June from a year earlier as a spike in activity the first week after reopening on 15 June petered out towards the end of the month.
