Energy stocks declined on Friday, ahead of the Labour Party conference, during which Ed Miliband is expected to outline plans to cut energy prices if his party wins the General Election. SSE and British Gas owner Centrica were both trading lower.

Supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury were trading lower as Nielsen revealed they had continued to lose market share. The value of industry sales fell 0.7% in the three months to the end of February, versus the same period a year ago, while food deflation stands at -0.4%.

Sales at Tesco in particular declined 1.1% to a 27.6% share of the market in the 12-week period, worse than recent indications from Kantar, and though Morrison's figures were flat it still saw its shares fall.

Land Securities Group and British Land Company were tracking the wider property development sector lower, a trend extending across Europe.

Meanwhile, shares in Premier Inn and Costa owner Whitbread received a boost from UBS, which upgraded its rating on the stock from 'sell' to 'neutral' and Deutsche Bank, which lifted its rating on the stock to 'buy'. However, neither broker seemed to factor into their calculations the likely impact on Costa of a new breakfast campaign launched on Friday by pubs group JD Wetherspoon.
