The FTSE 100 index was up 0.72% to 6,999.01 points in the late afternoon.

Bank stocks rose after the Fed raised interest rates 25 basis points and struck a more hawkish tone than expected, signalling three hikes next year. RBS shares gained as a result.

Centrica advanced as it published a trading update, saying it was continuing to make good progress against its strategic priorities and now expected to exceed the 2016 targets originally set out at its 2015 preliminary results.

Travel stocks received a boost as oil prices fell on a stronger dollar following the Fed's policy announcement, including International Consolidated Airlines, InterContinental Hotels Group and EasyJet.

On the other hand, miners were down on the stronger greenback as it made dollar-denominated commodities more expensive for other currency holders. Randgold Resources, Antofagasta, Anglo American, Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Polymetal were in the red as a result.
