FTSE 100 movers: Miners and housebuilders retreat
London's FTSE 100 was down 0.3% to 7,531.60 in afternoon trade on Friday as investors digested the latest twists and turns in Sino-US relations and a US threat to impose further sanctions on Turkey.
Miners were in the red as copper prices retreated, with Antofagasta and Anglo American both lower.
Housebuilders were under the cosh, with Taylor Wimpey, Barratt Developments and Persimmon all down as traders pointed to growing concerns about a no-deal Brexit.
London Capital Group analyst Jasper Lawler said: "Traders will be watching keenly for any headlines indicating the likelihood of the UK crashing out of Europe without a deal. Rating agencies, which had previously considered an orderly Brexit as the base case scenario are no longer willing to do so, highlighting the extent of the risk the UK now faces."
Earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt clarified comments he made a day earlier, when he told ITV that a "messy" no-deal Brexit "would be a mistake we would regret for generations".
Hunt said he believed Britain "would survive and prosper" but that it would be a big mistake for Europe.
B&Q and Castorama owner Kingfisher continued to lose ground a day after it said sales in the second quarter were boosted by the sunshine but margins were weaker than hopped due to further troubles in France.
