Oil and gas group Cairn Energy was a high riser on the FTSE 250 after discovering oil at its FAN-1 exploration well offshore Senegal, causing shares to surge. The find "materially upgrades the prospectivity" of the Sangomar Deep Block, the company said.

Cineworld shares also climbed after it was announced that its chief executive officer had acquired 3.64m shares in the cinema company.

On the downside, telecoms tester Spirent Communications saw shares sink after it warned that revenues and profits in the second half would be lower than previously guided due to lower demand in the US and China.

As on the top tier, travel companies were in decline, with Thomas Cook a notable decliner.

Hunting dropped into the red after Liberum Capital reduced its rating on the stock from 'hold' to 'sell'.
