FTSE 100 movers: Barclays jumps after appointing new chairman

Barclays jumped on the news it has appointed John McFarlane as chairman to replace David Walker, who will step down following the bank’s annual general meeting in 2015. McFarlane, who is currently chairman of Aviva and FirstGroup, will take on the role on 1 January.

Engineer GKN was boosted by an upgrade to 'overweight' by Barclays Capital, while leisure group Whitbread fell after a UBS downgraded it to 'sell'.

Miners were putting in a mixed performance with Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton in positive territory and Anglo American and Glencore in the red.

Fresnillo registered a modest decline after proposing to spend $450m on buying out its joint venture partner to take full ownership of certain assets in the Herradura Corridor, one of Mexico's most prospective gold belts.

Berenberg knocked Associated British Foods lower after cutting its target price from 3,060p to 2,850p.
