BMW chief executive Harald Krueger on Thursday called on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to compromise with the European Union and avoid a no deal Brexit.

Speaking as his firm released second quarter results, Krueger urged Johnson, who has taken a hardline stance on Brexit since taking office a week ago, to open a dialogue with business.

Krüger said Johnson should seek a “compromise that is acceptable to everyone”.

"Listen to the economy and listen to the people. He needs to be in a dialogue with business. I would visit Johnson to tell him this," Krueger said

He also warned a “hard Brexit is not in the interests of the country” and “both sides will lose” if the UK left without a deal on October 31.

Johnson and his hard right Brexiteer Cabinet ministers have ramped up talk of leaving the EU without a deal if the Irish backstop, which prevents a hard border with Ireland, is not removed.
