Wizz Air carried half again as many passengers in September as during the year earlier month and expanded its footprint in Eastern Europe.

The Eastern Europe-focused low-cost carrier transported approximately 4.57m passengers last month, for an increase of 51.5%, at a load factor of 87.1%.

The latter was 8.4 percentage points higher than in September 2021.

It also assigned an additional five aircraft to its base in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, bringing the total to 17 while adding capacity at Bacau, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi and Sibiu.

That was in tandem to the reopening of its base at Chisinau, Moldova, with three aircraft, and the repatriation of an aircraft that had been stranded in Ukraine.

During the same month, WizzAir Malta also obtained an air operator certificate and an operating license, carrying out its first flight to the island from Rome Fiumicino on 27 September.

From October, the carrier also said it would add 750,000 seats on sale from Rome and Milan, together with 12 new routes.

Furthermore, the company firmed up its order for 75 more A321neo aircraft from Airbus for delivery between 2028-29.

Wizz Air also posted a 12.7% drop in comparison to September 2021 in C02 emissions to 55.3 grams per passenger/kilometre.
