Chain solutions supplier Wincanton has won a new contract with aerospace and defence group BAE Systems.

Under the agreement, which will begin with immediate effect, Wincanton will provide goods management and inspection, storage and packing, and transportation services in BAE Systems’ Military Air & Information (MAI) operations at Warton and Samlesbury.

Wincanton said it will dedicate approximately 150 staff members to the new project, adding the continuing operations at the MAI Brough site will not be affected by the deal.

The London-listed group added it will also become the operator of a new purpose built defence logistics centre, due to be completed in 2016, which will see it become the first non BAE Systems business operating in the Samlesbury Enterprise Zone.

"This partnership is part of our continued drive for efficiency to ensure we are well placed to provide the best possible value products and services to our customers," said Steve Vandersteen, director of procurement and supply chain at BAE Systems MAI.

Wincanton shares were up 2.44% to 188.75p at 0942 BST.
