Sainsbury mistakenly advertised a poster in a shop window, encouraging workers to provoke customers to spend more money in store.

The sign urged staff to “encourage every customer to spend an additional 50p during each shopping trip between now and the year-end”.

The poster was spotted at the Romford Road store in Essex by customer, Chris Dodd. Dodd swiftly posted a picture of the poster on Twitter with the caption: "@sainsburys not sure this is supposed to be in your window".

Sainsbury replied to the tweet, admitting that the poster had mistakenly been placed in the store front, and was “meant for staff areas” only.

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury responded to the blunder: "We often use posters to make store targets fun and achievable for our colleagues.

"They are intended for colleague areas in the store, but this one was mistakenly put on public display."
