Irish carrier Ryanair said traffic grew 10% year-on-year to 10.4m customers, while the load factor, which measures how many seats were actually taken up on each flight, rose 2% to 95%.

Rolling annual traffic to August was up 15% to 96.3m customers.

Chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said: “These record monthly numbers and load factors are due to our lower fares, our stronger forward bookings and the continuing success of our ‘Always Getting Better’ customer experience programme, which continues to deliver stronger than expected traffic and load factors on our biggest ever summer schedule.”

The company said there were more service enhancements on the way in the autumn, including a new car hire service, a new website, a new app, new cabin interiors and improved flight menus.

At 0841 BST, Ryanair shares were up 2.4% at €12.41.
