Construction firm Galliford Try said on Tuesday that its Scottish business, Morrison Construction, has been awarded a £42m contract by the University of Strathclyde to design and build the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS).

The facility will be an 11,500 square metre centre of excellence for advanced manufacturing research and innovation, built on the new Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland adjacent to Glasgow Airport. Work is expected to begin in the summer.

The building will comprise three key components: a fully digital 'factory of the future'; a manufacturing skills academy; and a collaboration hub.

In addition, Morrison Construction has renewed its position as a Tier 1 Contractor on the hub South West Scotland framework for the second time. The framework is worth £200m to five contractors over three years.

Chief executive Bill Hocking said: "As the contractor of choice in Scotland, we are delighted to have been selected again by the University of Strathclyde to deliver this important facility that will transform manufacturing as we know it in Scotland.

"Hub South West Scotland has been a brilliant vehicle for developing innovative, sustainable and cost-effective solutions and it's fantastic news that we will be able to build on this with the renewal of our position on this important framework."
