British shoemaker Clarks said on Thursday that it would be cutting 900 jobs following its strategy review.

The company also confirmed it was in talks with advisers over funding options during the coronavirus crisis, City AM reported on Thursday.

The 195-year old company said the cuts would be partially balanced by the creation of around 200 new roles.

Around 700 employees will have to leave the business over 18 months, with 160 going immediately from its global operations, including 108 at its headquarters in Street, southwest England.

Clarks chief executive Giorgio Presca said: “There are exciting opportunities ahead for our business, and we are having to make some difficult decisions to get there.

“We thank all affected staff for their contribution to our business and they leave their roles with our heartfelt respect and support.”

The announcement comes after 170 jobs were cut last year as part of Clarks’ “made to last” turnaround strategy.

At the time, the company said it would “review its stores in line with changing consumer needs”.
