Defence company BAE Systems said on Tuesday that Jerry DeMuro will retire from his role as chief executive officer of the US business at the end of next year.

DeMuro will step down from the board of London-listed BAE Systems at the end of March and take on the role of executive vice president until the end of the year, remaining on the board of the US business. He will be responsible for the delivery of a number of strategic assignments across BAE’s US and other businesses, including a governance review of global shipbuilding.

Tom Arseneault will succeed DeMuro as president and CEO of the US and will join the UK board on 1 April 2020. He has been president and chief operating officer BAE Systems Inc since May 2019.

Chairman Roger Carr said: "I would like to thank Jerry for his outstanding leadership since his appointment in 2014, both as a highly effective member of the executive team and a valuable contributor to board discussion and decision making.

"In addition, I look forward to Tom joining the board in 2020 knowing that his skills, industry experience, and expertise will be important to the delivery of our operational performance and strategic objectives in the years ahead."
