Anglo American on Friday announced that management committee member Norman Mbazima, also the deputy chairman of its South Africa subsidiary, will step down after 18 years with the company.

The FTSE 100 listed mining giant said the 61-year-old will leave his executive responsibilities on 30 June, having enjoyed a varied career in roles such as finance director of Anglo American Platinum, chief executive of Scaw Metals from 2008 and later chief executive of Thermal Coal from 2009 to 2012.

Anglo American chief executive Mark Cutifani said he was "delighted" that Mbazima will now serve as non-executive chairman of subsidiary company Anglo American Platinum.

"Norman Mbazima has made an exceptional contribution to Anglo American over the last 18 years, delivered with tireless energy, most recently as Deputy Chairman of Anglo American South Africa. Norman has played a number of critical leadership roles, as CEO of Kumba Iron Ore and our South African coal business, and as joint acting CEO of our PGMs business, always bringing a unique perspective to our management team," said Cutifani.

A statement said an announcement about the leadership of Anglo American in South Africa will be made in due course.
