USA, Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup

The 2026 World Cup will be held in The United States, Mexico and Canada after their joint bid beat Morocco’s in a vote by FIFA member nations on Wednesday.

The North American bid for the tournament, which will be the largest ever held comprising of 80 matches, won 134 votes compared to the 65 cast for Morocco at the 68th FIFA congress in Moscow.

US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said: "Football is the only victor. We are all united in football. Thank you so, so much for this incredible honour. Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege."

Cordeiro said the tournament will generate $14bn in revenue and send $11bn in profits to FIFA.

Sixty of the matches will take place in 10 US host cities, while Mexico and Canada will see 10 games each at their own three host cities.

Both Mexico, in 1970 and 1986, and the United States, in 1994, have previously hosted World Cups.

The final is scheduled to be held at the 84,953-capacity MetLife Stadium, home to NFL sides the New York Giants and the New York Jets.

"We are humbled by the trust our colleagues in the Fifa family have put in our bid, strengthened by the unity between our three countries and the Concacaf region and excited by the opportunity we have to put football on a new and sustainable path for generations to come," said a statement from US Soccer.

Meanwhile, the North African nation’s bid was its fifth for the World Cup and would have been the second time the competition visited the continent, after the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

In a statement, the Moroccan Federation said: "I wish to congratulate FIFA for the conduct of this process and congratulate the president for what he has done in order to move things towards more transparency and more inclusion. I would like to reaffirm the determination of my country to continue to work for football and realise one day our dream to host the World Cup in Morocco."
