UK car production exceeded one million vehicles in the first seven months of the year for the first time in 12 years, according to industry data.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said the UK built 1.02m cars during the seven months, up 12.3% on the same period a year ago. It marked the first time the milestone has been reached in July since 2004.

"UK car production in 2016 is booming, with new British-built models in demand across the world,” said SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes.

In July UK car production came to 126,566 vehicles, 7.6% higher than the same month in 2015.

Hawes suggested the strong performance came despite uncertainty surrounding the European Union referendum. He said before the referendum, staying in Europe was vital for the future of the car industry for trade.

"Future success will depend on continued new car demand and attracting the next wave of investment so Britain must demonstrate it remains competitive and open for business,” he said.
