Theresa May unveils new climate change policies in Paris summit

Prime Minister Theresa May has announced new environmental policies including a £140m fund to help developing countries battle against the negative effects of climate change.

On Tuesday a climate change summit was celebrated in Paris to mark the two-year anniversary of the Paris climate accord.

Although US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the accord, French President Emmanuel Macron has urged other countries to uphold the accord and continue the fight against climate change.

The UK government says the money invested will help people address the effects of extreme weather caused by climate change. The new policies also include an alliance with Canada for lower use of coal and progress in the zero-emission vehicles front.

May said: “Tackling climate change and mitigating its effects for the world’s poorest are among the most critical challenges that we face. That is why I am joining other world leaders in Paris today for the One Planet Summit and committing to stand firmly with those on the front line of extreme weather and rising sea levels”.

She also added that doubling efforts to phase out coal and move towards electric car production shows that it is possible to cut down on emissions and favour business at the same time.

“Clean energy is already an easier, cheaper and safer option than coal in many of the poorest countries. y adopting 21st-century methods such as solar and wind power and energy storage, developing economies can today leapfrog the dirty technologies of the past,” said May.
