The campaign group Best for Britain that is fighting to keep the UK in the European Union has received £400,000 from billionaire George Soros through one of his foundations.

According to The Telegraph, Soros presumably donated the money through his Open Society foundation following a meeting he hosted at his Chelsea mansion with conservative donors to explore a possible contribution to the cause.

The Telegraph also said that Soros had invited businessman Stephen Peel and former Labour minister Lord Malloch-Brown, among others.

Soros was reportedly planning to recruit major Tory donors to undermine Theresa May’s Brexit negotiations as well.

The campaign's main objective was to push MP’s to request a second referendum, with The Telegraph having also obtained access to a Best for Britain document with the slogan "Brexit is not a done deal".

Best for Britain chairman Lord Malloch-Brown said that while Soros's donation was highly valued, he was not in fact the largest donor.

"We have never hidden our agenda; we have been campaigning hard to win a meaningful vote on Brexit, which we did, and to keep all options on the table, including staying in the European Union," he said.

According to the article, co-written by the Prime minister’s former chief of staff, Nick Timothy, the aim was to "convince MP’s to vote against the deal Theresa May negotiates with Brussels, regardless of its content."

"Malloch-Brown and his backers believe that, if Parliament rejects the Brexit deal, the government will fall, and Brexit can then be stopped."
