Farage has said that UKIP will be more supportive to a change in the voting system if it wins few seats despite receiving an estimated 4m votes.

He argued that the current system caused many voters to feel disenfranchised from the democratic process.

"I'm now a full convert to the idea that what first past the post is giving us in fragmented Britain is a campaign where you keep telling people: 'don't vote for them,' as opposed to 'do vote for me,'" he said.

He added that if he is still party leader by 2020, a bigger advertising budget would be of utmost importance and ignoring negative media attention would also be key.

However, he warned that if he didn't win South Thanet, he'd be up "for the chop".
