Crisis talks were held Monday night over the £20m press inquiry dubbed Operation Elveden, according to The Times.

Some of the most senior prosecutors in the UK discussed the continuation of the operation, which is investigating the matter of newspapers paying for source material information.

Director of public prosecutions Alison Saunders summoned the senior Treasury counsel and Metropolitan police officers just days after the Lord chief justice launched a query.

His dilemma was whether the 13th century law of misconduct in public office should be used to take reporters to court.

According to the paper, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd put a stop to three Elveden convictions last week because the misconduct was not proven to have caused real harm to the public interest.
