Mark Carney, the Bank of England’s governor, urged the new UK government on Thursday to hold the referendum on the country’s membership to the European Union (UE) “as soon as necessary”.

Carney stressed that the prospect of a referendum was stoking business uncertainty, and that this could harm the country’s economy as well as investors’ plans.

I am sure the government will act with appropriate speed

“The government has made it clear that it is a priority. I am sure the government will act with appropriate speed in developing the negotiations ... as soon as necessary,” Carney told BBC’s Radio 4 Today programme on Thursday.

"It's in the interests of everybody that there is clarity about the process and the question and the decision."

The BoE’s governor emphasised that the Union was the largest economy in the world. “It’s our largest investment destination. It’s the largest investor in the United Kingdom,” he added.
