US stocks closed in positive territory on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq reaching record highs as traders waded through a raft of corporate earnings.

The S&P 500 rose 0.7% to 2,280.07 points, the Nasdaq gained 0.9% to 5,600.96 points and the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.6% to 19,912.71 points.

Oil prices rose with West Texas Intermediate up 0.67% to $53.11 per barrel and Brent crude up 0.23% to $55.36 per barrel.

In currency markets, the dollar recovered from heavy losses in the wake of President Donald Trump’s protectionist inauguration speech.

The greenback rose 0.18% against the pound, 0.29% versus the euro and 0.97% versus the yen.

Trump on Tuesday met with the bosses of the largest automobile manufacturers in the US, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Mark Fields of Ford and Sergio Marchionne of Fiat Chrysler. The new President told the chief executives that environmental regulations are "out of control" and vowed to make it easier for the companies to open assembly plants in the US.

Shares in Ford, GM Motors and Fiat Chrysler nudged higher following the news.

Meanwhile, investors were sifting through a slate of earnings.

Alibaba rallied after the Chinese online retail giant reported a 54% rise in revenue, largely due to Singles Day.

Alcoa advanced after the company reported fourth quarter adjusted per-share earnings that missed analysts’ expectations.

Johnson & Johnson was sitting lower after its fourth quarter earnings beat expectations but revenue missed forecasts.

Verizon Communications declined after its fourth quarter earnings came below expectations

DR Horton’s shares climbed after the housebuilder’s first quarter profit beat expectations due to higher home sales.

DuPont was on the front foot after its fourth-quarter earnings beat expectations

3M, the maker of Scotch tape, slipped despite saying that fourth quarter revenue rose 11.3%

In economic data, Markit’s US manufacturing purchasing managers’ index rose to 55.1 in January from 54.3 in December, exceeding forecasts of 54.5. A reading above 50 signals an expansion in sector activity.

Existing home sales in the US fell more than expected as the supply of houses on the market dropped. The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales fell 2.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.49m units, falling shy of analysts’ estimates of 5.50m.

November sales were revised up to 5.65m units from the previously reported 5.61m units.
