US stocks closed slightly lower on Tuesday, as investors received mixed signals from Greece after false reports that creditors had agreed on proposals.

Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem dismissed the claims, adding that a deal over the country’s bailout was "not theoretically possible this week".

At close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 28.4 points, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq lost 2.15 and 6.41 points respectively. Sector-wise, energy and materials stocks led the charge, while a weaker dollar bouyed commodities, with crude oil and gold futures both higher.

Traders also attributed the rebound to a deepening sell-off in global bond markets. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was 2.268%, close to the high of 2015, compared with 2.19% on Monday.

US factory orders declined for the eighth time in nine months in April, figures released on Tuesday showed. According to the Commerce Department, orders for goods produced in US factories fell 0.4% month-on-month in April, a sharper drop than the 0.1% analysts had expected.

In company news, discount retailer Dollar General edged higher as first quarter profit beat expectations, although sales fell short.

Clothing retailer Guess is due to report after the closing bell. Shares were making gains despite analyst expectations that company will post a quarterly loss of 5 cents per share compared with 3 cents share a year ago.

Asian markets finished mixed, with the Shanghai Composite Index closing 1.7% higher.
